It's been too long... but Nationally Board Certified and more TpT Resources!

Sorry it's been so long... since July 2023?
Where did the time go? 

Let's see if I can recap here.

In my last post I mentioned how I needed to start working on my National Boards Certification as my previous certification was about to expire. Back in 2014 when I was teaching in the classroom I passed my first National Board Certification in ELA (Early and Middle Childhood/Literacy: Reading-Language Arts) and it was good for ten years!  
Here we are, fast forward ten years and I'm no longer teaching in the classroom, so trying to figure out how to complete the MOC (Maintenance of Certification) in an area I no longer taught seemed overwhelming and impossible! 
I knew I wanted to maintain my NBCT status so I made the decision to start over and certify in my new teaching area; health and fitness. Since I waited until the absolute last chance to renew, as in if I didn't pass this new certification, not only would my NBCT status expire, my teaching certificate would expire as well! Plan B would mean a scramble to provide the necessary clock hours, but no longer being a national board certified teacher. 
Talk about being down the wire! 
No pressure right?

When I first started the national board certification process I was working with three other colleagues in the same certification area as well as meeting monthly with a cohort mixed with teachers from around my school district. I had a lot of support and a lot of eyes looking through each component. Reading through multiple drafts and watching each video multiple times to try and catch every little detail! Not to mention all the studying for the one computer assessment component. Multiple choice and short answer questions... OH SO MANY flashcards we created to prep and test ourselves! Even completing 'practice test sessions' to make sure we were typing quick enough to squeeze in ALL the information to answer the question.

OMG- Just thinking back to how much work went into that year to collect, analyze, edit, and finalize each component gives me a little anxiety just thinking about it all. I was also only in my 5th year of teaching AND I had my first student-teacher at the time. I was still coaching high school gymnastics which meant November through February was literally working from 7 o'clock AM to 7 o'clock PM! Then working on National Boards work AFTER all that?!

I almost can't even imagine how I was able to stay sane through it all. It's like you go into autopilot at some point and in reflecting back it seems unimaginably impossible because I've currently shifted SO FAR away from being so busy! I stopped coaching gymnastics after 17 years so I could spend more of my time for myself and family. I've only had one other student-teacher because of the time commitment it takes (and I've also switched into a new position- teaching health & fitness) and wasn't ready to tackle teaching someone else as I was just adjusting myself.   

So, saying that I was VERY apprehensive and highly anxious to start this whole National Board Certification process again would be an understatement... AND I'd be doing it solo this time. 
No cohort. 
No other colleagues.
Just me.
UGH! 

Was it even possible?  I knew I was determined and focused enough to stay on-task with what needed to be done. I also had 10 more years of teaching experience under my belt and knowledge of the whole 'National Boards' process, but I was starting over in a new subject area and that freaked me out! 

My new certification would be for Health & Fitness. It'd been since 2006, graduating from college that I had spent time with studying and thinking about Health & Fitness content in that way. Luckily I kept all those old college textbooks and I dusted them off and started to get back to the basics of all the foundational concepts that I'd need to pull this off! I started to re-read and create MORE flashcards to help prepare for yet another computer assessment! 

Needless to say I started the last school year planning and preparing lessons that would help me to collect the best evidence to complete each component. That was the plan anyways and there was no turning back at this point. 

You know it's a bit crazy when you look back and wonder how it was all possible. I mentioned 'autopilot' before and I don't even know if that best describes the feeling of it all. It's like you just know IT HAS to get done, and so you do it. You hunker down, put in the work, and do whatever you have to. Somehow the videos get recorded- it's 10 years later so instead of someone standing and recording me during the lesson I have my iPhone plugged into this Swivel device that is set-up to follow me around as I teach. The microphone is already build into the tracking device so it's hands free!  I recorded multiple videos by myself and finally just selected the two that I'd have to make work. 

It's never perfect of course, at one point I was walking too fast and the 'tracking device' didn't keep up so the video is still recording my voice and we're all still carrying on with the lesson, but for what felt like an eternity, the camera is pointing off in the wrong direction. Yes, it was actually only 10 seconds, but there was no going back. I had to make this video work and I was second guessing my choice all the way until the morning I got the email saying that I'd passed!  

So yes. I passed. I endured a crazy busy year and submitted ALL FOUR components in one year (you now have the option of completing one or more at a time to stretch out the process so it's not so overwhelming, but remember I waited until the last opportunity so completing all four components was my ONLY option without there being a lapse in my certification). 


There it is! I'm Nationally Board Certified again; Physical Education/Early and Middle-Childhood.

I was out of town the day the emails were coming to announce pass/fail. It was the first weekend in December and we'd flown down to Phoenix to visit family as well as watch the Seahawks vs. Cardinals NFL game. I set an alarm so I could wake up and check my results before I needed to actually get up. I needed to see the results by myself and know beforehand so I could mentally process and get ready to face everyone that was going to ask.
I opened the email and saw 'fireworks' (if you know you know) and the biggest relief washed over me! It was as if I'd been holding my breath all this time! ...and the waiting... OMG the waiting... since submission in May is killer!  

Needless to say I was proud of all the work I'd put in again, but even prouder of the fact that I did it alone. No one else watched my videos to give feedback. No one else read my papers to edit, just me. Don't get me wrong, I have amazing colleagues in my building, many NBCT who offered to help, but I'm not one to often ask for help. It's hard to coordinate around schedules, everyone is busy with their own work loads, and honestly I was too nervous to have others check my work. 

I don't recommend going solo if it's your first time going through the process, but it can be done. 
 
So what else?

Since I wasn't able to work much on my TpT resources while working on my National Boards, I was excited to get back to creating things when I could. Over the summer I was able to create a much needed Nutrition resource with realistic food cards. I didn't have a lot of resources available to teach Nutrition and was always putting together a hodgepodge of materials to make it work. I LOVE what I was able to create and the kids did so much better having the food labeled so they could actually name the different food items. 







I enjoyed creating each of the different food pieces and tried to create a wide variety of items so show all of the different choices out there!  Maybe encourage students to try something new or at least see the different options. 

With the weight of National Boards work off my shoulders, I started to spent time looking through and planning out my school year to include new units that I didn't have time to teach before, or I wasn't sure how to execute...one being Jump Rope Ninja! I've seen so many resources online and a training I attended earlier this Fall gave suggestions on how to best incorporate the jump roping activities with the program Jump Rope Ninja! I was still hesitant until I started to create my own resource to best fit my needs, and of course wanted to share it with others!




That's what I created!  A mix of different certificates, bulletin board materials, and various resources to use for a Jump Rope Ninja program. It's a mix of what I could find online, but wanted to make it 'cuter' with fonts and images. Lately it's gained some traction on TpT since the PE Specialist is currently teaching his jump rope ninja unit and shares his videos online... and I think this leads to people searching TpT for resources and they find mine!  Yay! 

Personally, I have my materials organized to start after Spring Break this year and can't wait to see how it goes!  I'm sure there will be kinks... things that don't work, or maybe it's a hit and what I use will work perfectly! One can only hope, Haha.

What else?
I've also been using this new resource I created to teach Muscles and Bones with my intermediate students. It's been my focus for my SGG in our Teacher Evaluation this year. I selected to focus on using Assessments in the classroom and wanted to use Muscles & Bones as the content to assess. Again, I didn't already have and/or couldn't find any resources to fit my needs so I'd have to create my own!

So I started creating and putting together a mix of resources to teach muscles and bones and so far it's going well!  I have a bulletin board that we add new muscles and bones to each week as well as some handouts that students will use to study and test their understanding. We'll assess one last time this spring to see what they've learned! 









It's been a work in progress... I keep updating the resource as I'm personally using the resources and need to modify what's working for us in class. I hope others find it useful too and the feedback has been positive so that's good!

That was a lot.

And that was just an update with 'school' stuff keeping me busy, let alone the rest of life, but that will have to be in another post! 

As the title of this blog, as well as my TpT store states; Find Your Balance. That's what I continue to do... sometimes it's a little more school than life and then it tips to more life than school, but currently I'm enjoying the balance of both. 

Spring is right around the corner here in the PNW, and with warmer weather and more sunshine always comes the itch to get outdoors and explore! Even as I type this post I'm looking out the window to see the partly cloudy, high 40's temp and feel the urge to wrap this up and get outside.

Summer Break is underway

I think of summer break in weekends.  

I have 10 weekends without setting an alarm Sunday night to get ready for another work week.  

Well, we're down to 7 weekends left.  I know that seems like summer has barely started, so let me clarify.  Three of these weekends are already planned, out of town for one and a little road trip for two of the others.  

Anyways, that means ONLY 4 WEEKENDS left of summer!  

I know, I know.  I'll slow down. I should be lucky that I get 10 weeks off in the first place, right?  Not going down that rabbit hole... instead, I'll look back on how summer has been going.

Soaking up the sunshine!



That's a typical 'Lake Life' weekend for me plus a lot of pickle ball too.  No pictures to show for that though. Too busy playing.  I love being able to move in so many ways over the weekend.  I recently, well, back in October, turned 40 so I appreciate that I CAN still move in these ways that I enjoy.  I look forward to many more years of movement too, and that's why switching into teaching Health & Fitness instead of just the classroom is so much more meaningful for me.  

I want to be able to share as much information about making choices to help enjoy the healthiest life you can is so important to me!  Which is why when I hear I only have 4 weekends left, it puts me in a panic.  I need the time to create!  I have a list of resources I want to create to help in teaching my content in Health & Fitness because much of the information is outdated, uninspiring, OR it's just not there!  

This week I was able to finalize my resource for teaching Essential Nutrients and I LOVE how it turned out!  I can't wait to create a new bulletin in the gym in August when I go back to school.

This is just an example of what a bulletin board could look like with the resources included, but I'll try to replace it with an actual photo when I create my own in the gym.

I'm looking forward to using these teaching posters when I start teaching our Nutrition Unit.  This last year I had some of the BEST questions asked by students when we talked about nutrients, but I didn't have any visuals to help support the information I was explaining.  So I'm SUPER excited to be able to have these to use when explaining each essential nutrient.  

Each poster has some simple information with food examples to help students understand food choices they can make to help them meet the needs of this nutrient.  Here's an example of the Proteins poster:



Again, cute right?  

I mean c'mon, look at that package of tofu!  It took what felt like FOR-EV-ER to create, but I'm glad I stuck with it because it finally turned out in the end.  

Notice how many plant based proteins there are compared to animal based... haha!  Sorry, I might have a bit of a bias there.

For me, it's been a little over 2 years eating a plant-based (vegan) diet, so it's been interesting as I teach nutrition and being able to cover all the information that students SHOULD be able to know, but also being able to plant the seed of information that's often hidden and kept in the dark.  I don't think it's fair that the nutrition standards are very OUTDATED and funded by "agencies" that keep this unhealthy lifestyle circling year after year.  But THAT could be a whole post on it's own, so let's get back to the point of this point which is creating these NEW resources!

As I mentioned before, there's not a lot of inspiring resources to use when teaching nutrition in Health & Fitness so I created this next resource as a simple way to reinforce the food groups and the My Plate diagram. 

There's not much to it, but I didn't have something like it already so this is what I created:




Every My Plate diagram that I have already has the food groups labeled.  I didn't have a resource that allowed students to be able to place the pieces on the diagram.  I'm looking forward to being able to use the resource with different activities in the gym.  For example, a simple relay race where students have to run down and pick up a food group piece and then bring it back and place it on the My Plate diagram.  You can incorporate this with basketball, soccer, basic locomotor movements as a second layer of content. 

Actually, as I type this I'm thinking I need to already revise this resource to include pieces WITHOUT the food group label to allow another layer of understanding.  Can students associate the correct food group and color?   

So, I guess with that, I'm going to wrap this up so I can get to making that change and add it to the resource!  I'm also going to use this momentum to get started with my next project.  Summer starts to get away quickly, so hopefully it won't be so long until my next post.

Fall is here!

Can't believe it's already the end of October.  Tomorrow is Halloween and then it's onto a new month.  

November means holidays are JUST around the corner! 

Ugh! 
Bring on the rush. 
The busyness.  
The craziness of weekends and counting down until Christmas.  
Christmas!

Okay.
Let's pump the brakes a little bit. 

Before I flip the calendar into November, let me take a moment to reflect on these past two months. Starting another school year and all the resources I've been working on, while trying to FIND MY BALANCE along the way.

Okay, here goes! 

End of August... I started by COMPLETELY clearing out and reorganizing my PE office.  Literally pulled EV-ER-Y-THING out of the office and onto the gym floor.

Yes. 
It was A LOT!  




Right?
A LOT! 

I couldn't just rearrange all the equipment and make sense of ALL the stuff until it was OUT and I had a clean slate to work with. 




It was A LOT of work, but work and sweat well spent!  I'm so glad I bit the bullet so to speak and just rolled up my sleeves and got to work. 

Now I know EXACTLY what equipment I have, and where it is.  As I've been teaching for a couple months now, I can honestly say that it makes my heart super happy and content walking into my space and seeing it all organized.  Plus it helps save me SO MUCH TIME when planning my lessons and getting supplies organized. 

It looks like this now:




Doesn't that just give you a sense of... calm?  
Like take a breath. 
Ahhhhh.

As weird as it sounds, when things get crazy at school or behaviors with students start to bubble, I CLEAN.
I start to organize and clean.
Therefore, starting the school year with a clean slate helps me to find balance. 

Currently I'm working to organize and label these shelves.  I just printed the last of the labels I need and will put them on tomorrow when I'm back to work. 



As I cleared the gym of ALL the equipment it was then time to update the WALLS!  I had already cleared all the old posters and banners at the end of the school year in June.  
Again. 
Blank slate.

Being in the classroom I've learned that the more things I hang and have plastered on the wall, simply become camouflage over time.  
Knowing that, I wanted to go with LESS IS MORE in the gym space, and BIGGER is BETTER!

So I started to create big blocks of space that would be used for bulletin boards of information.  I wanted to incorporate some of the resources I'd been creating for TpT and that I thought I'd need for the school year. 
Remember, this is my FIRST year  being at ONE school and teaching ALL grade levels!  I knew I was going to be doing a little bit of 'building the plane while I fly'! 












It's still a work in progress, but I get that happy heart feeling each day I walk into my gym and I LOVE IT! 
Two months in, and I STILL find myself feeling happy when I walk in AND leave the gym each day. 

I really am blessed to be back at my 'home' school teaching PE!  Cheers to Year 14 being a fresh start and the beginning of my Health & Fitness journey!

Last Weeks of Summer

Another summer break is about finished.  Where did the time go?  

Oh yeah.  Weekends at the lake. Endless hours on the couch knitting.  Multiple days just relaxing without worry about the day or time.  It's been nice.  As much as I need each summer break to refuel and recharge for a new school year, I've also been using the time to create new resources for the upcoming school year.  













See! All the things you need to start the school year, right? I always LOVED putting together the Welcome To Our Class letter and goodie bags.  The anticipation of waiting for my newest set of kids to walk in and see them waiting at their desk was so exciting for me.  

Having all my anchor charts pre-made and ready to be filled in with student responses. Even the popcorn bags for Open House or a Back-to-School Night all prepared with ribbons tied and tucked neatly in a basket.  It's like the CALM before the STORM.  

Of course this year will be different for me. Year 14 of teaching and I'm in MY OWN gym!  Yea! Last year I traveled between 4 different schools and shared the gym space with the other Health & Fitness teachers.  I'm SO lucky to be back at the school where I was teaching in the classroom.  I'm looking forward to seeing my colleagues, previous students, their families, and the community. Nothing like being back at home. 

With that said, I'm going to start transitioning from working on classroom resources to creating and focusing on Health & Fitness resources.  I've already started a handful of projects for back-to-school and look forward to creating many more.

As well as creating some Fitness Measurements sheets and folders to organize ALL THE THINGS that we'll use when creating, monitoring, and reflecting on our SMART goals this year.

As much as I want to be back at school setting up my own space  [I CAN'T WAIT to reorganize the gym office and equipment. Can you say LABELS. ON. EVERY. THING!],  I'm going to try and soak up these last few weeks of summer without doing too much 'school' work.  I'm sure there'll be a little TpT'n in there.  There always is, but at least it's relaxing.

End-of-the-Year Memory Book

We're in the homestretch.  

The countdown is underway... only 26 days until Summer Break! 

We can actually see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Every year is different and yet the same as well.  You start the year all cheerful and excited.  The holidays in the beginning help you to push through.  Then there's the hope of Spring Break to looks towards... and finally the long stretch until Summer Break!  

Somehow any craziness that happens throughout the year is blocked out and hidden away as you just put your head down and fight through the last weeks to finish.  Then by some secret magic or maybe a hidden talent we teachers have, the summer refuels our bodies and reenergizes us to start all over again!  Yes, we're probably a bit crazy to do this job day in and day out. It's draining, frustrating, and tiring every day.  But, OH SO REWARDING! 

So, how do we make it through these last weeks while maintaining our sanity?  FUN and EXCITING activities of course!  Every year I always looked forward to creating a Memory Book for students to fill out and reflect upon our year.  

Somehow students have the AMAZING capability to remember all those funny, embarrassing, and nothing to do with academics, moments that happen in our classrooms.  It's in activities like these that we're reminded of all the JOYS of teaching, and therefore reminded of how it's all worth it! 

Over the years I've mix and matched and recreated pages to put together for an end-of-the-year Memory Book for my students and their families.  I say their families because I included A LOT of pictures, art work, and other 'memorabilia' that create more of a keepsake of our year together.  

After starting to create resources on TpT, I knew I wanted to create a new Memory Book so others would have the chance to create these keepsakes for their students as well.  I'm hoping to add on to this resource with activities to complete throughout the entire school year, and not just remembering at the end of the year, but that'll have to wait until I have more free time. AKA Summer Break! 

So, what did I come up with?  14 different pages to complete as the end of the year comes to a close.  Each Memory Book includes a cover page for your specific grade level as well.  Simply print the pages and staple together for an easy NO PREP activity to use in the last weeks of school.  

OR.. you can step it up a notch and create more of a 'keepsake' for your students and their families by completing the cover first and then laminating and binding them into a booklet with the pages inside.   This option takes just a little prep on your part, but a handy volunteer can easily laminate covers if possible, as well as binding the booklets!  Then they're ready to hand out and have students work on the Memory Book pages inside.

Memory Books are a fun way to wrap up at the end of the year.  Students enjoy filling out each page with their memories and reflect on all their learning.  It helps to give closure to the school year as well and beginning to think about next year.  

Having independent work that students actually want to complete is invaluable at this point in the school year!  Am I right?
